Diesel Prices Put Harvest on Premium Fuel

The harvest season has found a new way to be expensive, because apparently equipment fuel heard crop margins were feeling lonely.

Fuelish timing: Diesel prices are hitting record highs right as combines, tractors, semis and grain dryers are asking for their seasonal buffet. That is lovely news for exactly no one, unless your business model is selling fuel while farmers mutter into the steering wheel.

How we got here: Crude oil jumped as war-related disruptions complicated tanker traffic, and wholesale inflation added another little kick in the shin as diesel costs climbed. Farm groups are now walking into Washington with production costs already high and a farm bill still acting like a tractor that needs three more turns before it starts.

The Capitol math: Farmers and ranchers are on Capitol Hill this week with fuel, fertilizer and equipment costs doing their best impression of a bad auction. Diesel does not just move harvest. It moves fertilizer, feed, livestock, groceries and every “quick” trip that somehow becomes 50 miles.

Why it matters: Fuel is one of the few inputs farmers cannot politely ignore until next season. When diesel gets this spicy, every pass across the field has to justify itself. That is not efficiency. That is harvest doing budget Pilates.
