Beef Orders Try to Calm the Cattle Pen

Washington is trying to rebuild the cattle herd, which is adorable because cows still insist on using biology instead of a policy memo.

The steer-down: President Donald Trump signed two executive orders aimed at ranchers, small processors and meat-market competition. The package calls for more aggressive Packers and Stockyards Act enforcement, expanded interstate market access for eligible meat products, and a new guaranteed loan program for small and regional beef processors.

Label able: One order tells agencies to review country-of-origin labeling authorities for beef, because apparently the meat case needs fewer mystery novels and more subtitles. It also asks the Interior Department to revisit gray wolf and Mexican wolf recovery status, a move that will be watched closely by ranchers, wildlife advocates and anyone who enjoys a policy fight with teeth.

Counter move: The wrinkle is that the beef fight was already sizzling. U.S. Representative Shomari Figures, D-Ala., introduced a bill to reverse the earlier beef import proclamation and require congressional approval before tariff relief on beef imports. So yes, the cattle pen now has an executive-order subplot and a congressional rebuttal.

Why it matters: Ranchers want better markets, consumers want cheaper beef, processors want capacity, and Washington wants credit. That is a full chute.
